Welcome to Ottawa Framing & Display. My name is Andrea—you may recognize me. I’ve been framing for a very long time. In addition to being a lifelong custom framer, I’m also a portrait artist.

I started this career 25 years ago when I walked into a small shop to frame a commissioned pencil portrait. I wanted to learn how to frame, and from there the rest is history. Thank you, Lance and Paul, for making it happen for me. I almost retired not long ago, but I’m staying in the game.

I think I’ve framed just about anything you can imagine putting in a frame. What I love most is the skill and detail that go into shadowbox framing—you really can frame anything that’s important to you.

I’ve framed something as tiny as a bumblebee (yes, it was dead) and something as large as a 14-foot Canadian Peace Tower flag. I love the challenge framing brings: it’s essential that pieces are preserved with archival materials so they last forever, and equally important that they’re framed with respect.

Over the years, I’ve shared emotional moments with clients who have brought in memorabilia of loved ones. One time, a woman brought in her late father’s reading glasses. As she was leaving the consultation, I mentioned I would clean them before framing. She and her sister stopped me in my tracks, both in tears: “No, don’t clean them—those are his fingerprints.” Tears were shed, a bond was created, and now those glasses hang on their wall for eternity.

Once, I shadowboxed a few lacy bras a gentleman had collected from the Playboy Bunny Mansion. I didn’t ask questions. Most of the time, though, I do ask questions. It’s so important to truly understand a client’s vision, especially when they’re framing something deeply sentimental, like a pair of baby shoes or an old tobacco pipe. Many clients don’t fully understand framing, and most can’t easily visualize the finished product—that’s where I come in. My role is to help you see that vision and ensure you receive the absolute best result in the end.
