How We Professionally Package Artwork for Safe Shipping
Shipping artwork isn’t just about putting it in a box. It’s about protecting your time, money, and something that’s often irreplaceable. At Framing & Display, we regularly prepare framed art, prints, and custom pieces for shipping, whether they’re heading across town or across the country.
Below is a simple overview of how we professionally package artwork to ensure it arrives safely and in the same condition it left our shop.
Step 1: Assess what is being shipped
Every artwork is different, so the first step is assessing exactly what is being shipped. We look at factors such as:
- The type of piece (canvas, framed artwork with glass, acrylic, plak mount, etc.)
- The size and weight of the artwork
- The materials involved, including glazing or surface finishes
This assessment allows us to determine the specific packaging requirements needed to properly protect the piece during transit.
Step 2: Plan the appropriate packaging
Once the artwork has been assessed, we determine the most suitable packaging method. Different pieces require different solutions. For example, a plak mount is packaged differently than a framed piece with glass.
Based on the assessment, we select the correct combination of protective materials, reinforcement, and boxing to ensure the artwork is secured, supported, and ready for safe transport.
Step 3: Cushion and stabilize the artwork
Once the surface is protected, the artwork is wrapped and cushioned to absorb shock. This typically includes:
- Multiple layers of protective wrap
- Rigid support to prevent bending or flexing
- Edge protection for corners, which are vulnerable points
The goal is to ensure the artwork cannot shift inside the package.
Step 4: Secure packaging for transport
Artwork is placed into appropriately sized boxes, usually custom made on site. We never use oversized packaging that allows excess movement. Void space is filled, and the package is sealed to remain rigid during handling.
For larger or heavier pieces, additional reinforcement is used to maintain structural integrity throughout shipping.

Step 5: Final checks before shipment
Before shipment or delivery, we perform a final check to confirm:
- The artwork is fully immobilized
- All vulnerable areas are protected
- The package is clearly labeled and ready for transport
